Exercises to Prevent Falls-

There are over 110 articles and reviews on preventing falls in older people by exercising.
Multiple studies reveal that Tai Chi shows statistically and significant improvement in
preventing falls. Benefits include increasing physical activity, strength, balance, and
improving functional status. A Cochrane Review written in 2009 which performed a meta
analysis of four tai chi trials found that people who did tai chi had a 35% reduced risk of
falls relative to controls. Berg Balance Scale, Timed up and Go, Functional Reach, and
ankle and knee joint strength and range of motion all showed improvement with these
movements. Recently, experts from the British and American Geriatrics Society have
reviewed the medical research and recommend exercises which improve strength and
balance, specifically Tai Chi, to reduce falls in the elderly by as much as 55%.
